Critter

What are ghosts?

Listen on SoundCloud

The curtain shifts, the air turns thin,
Something wrong beneath my skin.
It watches through a blinking seam
Not a ghost, but something mean.

It doesn’t move, but I still freeze,
Its gaze is crawling through the trees.
Not eyes, not flesh, not breath or bone
But somehow, I am not alone.

If I blink, it moves again
Closer now than it was then.
No sound, no breath, no flashing light
Just hunger staring through the night.

I passed a mirror, saw it there
A shape that wasn’t in the air.
No feet, no face, just folded limbs,
And something twitching where it grins.

It never speaks, but I still hear
A scraping thought behind my ear.
It doesn’t want, it doesn’t need
But I still feel that I should bleed.

If I blink, it moves again
Closer now than it was then.
No sound, no breath, no flashing light
Just hunger staring through the night.

The veil is thin, the dark is deep,
It watches me when I can’t sleep.
Not dead, not god, not devil born
Just something made before the form.

If I blink, it moves again
Closer now than it was then.
No sound, no breath, no flashing light
Just hunger staring through the night.

Now every shadow hides its grin,
And every silence claws my skin.
I blink, I breathe, I try to flee
But critters still remember me.
